Green Growth Terms – Vehicles Miles Traveled (VMT)

WHAT IS IT? Vehicle miles of travel (or VMT) is the measure of the sum total of all vehicle travel in miles over a transportation system and is used to compare the efficiency of alternative transportation networks.  VMT is often used to assess the level of traffic congestion over a set period of time VMT per day or VMT per year.  VMT is often used as a surrogate for air quality however changes in fuel economy (miles per gallon) has reduced over all emissions.
