Earth Day from Seattle: A Corn-ucopia of choices!

I am probably the only blogger here that remembers the first US Earth Day in 1970
- 40 years ago, I was 10 (you do the math). Still wearing bell bottoms and dewy-eyed, we were called environmentalists. Railing against industrial and individual polluters, we picked up trash in our greenspaces, there was just much more of it back then. Then as now (Earth Day 2010) media played a huge role in increasing awareness and changing public opinion. Most influential was the Keep America Beautiful Campaign. Even with it’s controversial “crying indian” commercial, an environmental movement was born.
The “movement” also gave birth to the Environmental Protection Agency charged with regulating industry and commerce to keep our water, air and land clean. The agency administered by a Presidential cabinet position has morphed over it’s 40 years. The latest land mark transformation is the partnership created by EPA, DOT, and HUD last June 2009 promoting Smart Growth - dense urban development for low income people supported efficiently by transit to insure preservation of natural resources.
So what will we be doing for Earth Day in the Puget Sound? Clean up, Visit Nature, Create, Educate and Garden! A cornu-copia awaits, take your pick…..

Wow, did people really throw garbage out of their cars in the 70′s?
Strangely, yes. Maybe just in the US. But it was common to chuck a pop can out the window. Litter laws may seem overly prescriptive. In WA you can get a ticket for not having a litterbag in your vehicle, but the law is in place for just this reason. Less common to see the “indian” guy in a canoe.
