STARS – New LEED-like rating for sustainable streets

A new LEED-like rating system for transportation is being developed (predominately in Portland) called STARS. Portland’s Mayor blogged about it last month. There was also an article about the STARS project in the Daily Journal of Commerce.
Other cities have started looking into the STARS system, including the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission who is working with the STARS team to apply STARS to their Highway 1 HOV and Auxiliary Lanes project.

The Santa Cruz staff and advisory committee are currently reviewing the draft STARS credits. One of the clear values of STARS continues to be challenging all of us to redefine transportaiton problems – in terms of access, climate and energy, benefit/cost – which by definition then results in a different mix off solutions.
