Crazy Commute in Vancouver, BC

2010 August 27

This is an interesting idea to raise awareness of how we get to work and move about our cities and towns. A citizen wants people to think about how they get to work on Friday, August 27th. He plans to – see a  commute here:

The Crazy Commute Website website has more information.

Other suggestions of crazy ways to get to work include pogo sticks, skateboards, bicycle, and the bus. This makes my usual MAX light rail and walk and occasional bicycle commute look more ordinary.

Here in Portland, we pride ourselves on “keeping Portland weird”: I recently participated in the Providence Bridge Pedal, and noticed one of the riders on the 36 mile, 10 bridge ride was riding a unicycle. It looked like a lot of fun, a lot of work, and very “weird” at the same time. While I lack the coordination to use a unicycle or even a skateboard to commute, I like the idea of trying a new and strange way of getting to work. However, my 11 mile commute is probably still best served by TriMet or bicycle. Carrying a canoe a better part of eleven miles is simply not attainable for my commute.

What crazy way would you commute to work given the chance?

Nice video! You know, there are quite a few people in the Seattle area that kayak and canoe to work – some from the islands to downtown Seattle! Apparently, the kayak-commuting community is growing quite a bit. I ride the bike every day, but I only live 2 miles by land from work. If I had water to cross, I might just think about the canoe or kayak method…

    Great post!

    Cheers,
    Joshua

Hey Joshua Always a great motto to live near work. A friend kayaked across Lake Washington – Sand Point to Kirkland. Time was close but Karma was off the chart for the Kayak.

As a Canadian, it is probably my duty to commute at least once a year by canoe. But I just can’t help but thinking a pogo stick would be way more fun. Cool video!

There you go! Good motivation to dust off the canoe or kayak and be weird, at least for one day. I think however you commute, it’s good to think about other ways to travel to where you need to go.

Thanks Joshua! The weirdness definitely makes living in Portland interesting.
We are currently looking to move closer to work, so I can easily ride my bike to work – I am ready to downsize my commute time and exercise at the same time.
